Starting a business with a Virtual Assistant

May 2019   |   Written By Lisa Mackerness

You’ve seen the websites and adverts to know that a VA helps you with your admin. But as a new business owner what can a VA do for you?

You have decided to start your new business and have loads of ideas but need to bounce these off someone with experience. Your VA can research the possibilities of that idea, look at potential cheap or even FREE software platforms with a view to marketing that new idea for you. Next the VA can assist with that list of tasks. Whether it’s getting the new website up and running, marketing on social media or creating document templates needed for the every day running of your business.

As the company progresses and your position turns towards being the CEO, your creative mind has new ideas. Your VA will deal with work to keep the business on an even keel so you get to make decisions on the direction your company needs to grow.

Now you’re probably thinking – I’ve already set up what’s required but need to drive the business forward within a budget. Below are some great steps to promote your business whatever your skills at a low cost.

Step 1. Referrals

It has been statistically proven that any new business attracts their first few clients through referrals. So, my tip is share, share, share. From your Facebook page, create a business page where you can highlight your work and share this with all your established contacts that have been made over the years. This is the start of your database!

Spreading the word and telling everyone about your new business is important. Handing business cards out every day is the most direct way of advertising and ensures that recipients read and keep the card. It might feel like a waste of time but it’s important to get your name out there. You only need a few mums talking up the school about needing a specific trade or professional then bingo, that comment we hear a lot, “I know someone that can do that”. Then potentially your first client is born as most people will always prefer to work with referrals than searching online. Don’t underestimate the power of Networking and talking about your company.

Step 2. Marketing

Start to think how best to market your business. LinkedIn provides an excellent platform for academics with a client at your fingertips. Trade professionals could think about local newspapers and online trade search engines, short term to build your referrals.

There is also the option of email marketing to engage with clients who are really interested in what you are offering.  It allows you to target with specific messages to your ideal clients, showcasing what you can do or offer them.  Creating a series of emails, regular newsletters and special offers can help to build a strong relationship with potential clients. I personally recommend Mailchimp which is a free platform if you have a mailing list under 2000 contacts.

Step 3. Get Organised

So, you’ve ticked the boxes from your list, you’ve started to get your company name out there. Now to be successful and stay successful, GET ORGANISED! By being organised you can ensure your tasks are completed quickly and smoothly which will mean creating a new list, yes sorry another list!

Your best adverts are generated through satisfied clients, keeping in touch might make the difference between a recommendation or not. Replying to requests from clients or potential clients is important so give yourself a response deadline to ensure they receive an answer by return.  We all hate waiting, so be organised and get a structured plan in place. Ensure you can follow your plan for the duration of your business and be prepared to adapt when your company grows!

I hope this has been of help to you and if you feel that I can assist further or offer advice then please give me a call or email

“I have worked with lots of VA’s in the past and Milestones really stood out in terms of how well organised they are.

I also liked the fact that Lisa was prepared to help on any task even if they could be quite menial at times. Equally she could handle high-level work for me too.”
